Santa Fe is the capital of New Mexico. Music and opera are well represented in Santa Fe with the annual Santa Fe Opera productions, which take place between late June and late August each year, and the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival which is also held at the same time, mostly in the recently-refurbished movie theatre, the Lensic Theatre, now a major performing arts venue. National League of Cities Conference Focused on Finding Local Responses to the National Economic Crisis
District 3 City Councilor Miguel Chavez gathered with nearly 3,000 municipal leaders and nearly 130 youth delegates earlier this month at the 2008 National League of Cities’ (NLC) Congress of Cities and Exposition in Orlando, Fla., to discuss leadership and innovative programs and solutions that serve the needs of the nation’s hometowns. During the Conference leaders exchanged best practices that provide economic opportunities, make available more affordable housing, ensure public safety and allow more effective interaction with state and federal agencies. Conference attendees also discussed at length a stimulus plan to recover the national economy through focused improvements to municipal infrastructure, such as streets, water systems and transportation.
“As we discussed recovery plans for our national economy, it was clear that the solution to the economic crisis will require the leadership and participation of our cities and towns,” Councilor Chavez said. “I am happy to say that cities in New Mexico and other western states played a prominent role in this conference.”
Councilor Chavez is serving a two-year term on the NLC Board of Directors and also serves on the Resolutions as well as Policy and Legislation committees.
